Lot Essay

Dr. Sibylle Groß has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

Having returned to Berlin after years of studying in Dusseldorf, Brussels, Paris and Munich, Ury built a reputation for his street scenes and interiors of Berlin. In his paintings and pastels, he played with the effects of rainy streets or artificial light in nocturnal scenes in cafés, making him one of the first artists in Germany to capture the vibrancy of modern city life, depicting the mood of the developing metropolis with its traffic and busy nightlife.
