‘The range of plain table-cuts is vast.’ -Herbert Tillander
Diamond Cuts in Historic Jewellery 1381-1910

Table-cut diamonds are each highly unique. Some stones are found with crowns of varying heights, others have tables ranging from very small to very large sizes; pavilions can be shallow, sometimes culets are outsized. This huge range of possible shapes gives each of these stones exceptional character. Over centuries, table-cuts have been used in many intriguing ways including covering the dials of precious timepieces as well as providing protection for small miniature paintings. The largest recorded is the ‘Russian Table Portrait Diamond’, also known as the ‘Tafelstein,’ which weighs over 25 carats and is in the Kremlin, Moscow. Table-cut diamonds were widely used in Indian jewelry in the 17th Century and also found popularity in Europe, particularly in France.
