Jan Müller studied under Hans Hofmann alongside Wolf Kahn in the late 1940s. In 1951, Kahn organized the 813 Broadway Exhibition, including Müller's work, which gave rise to the artists’ cooperative Hansa Gallery. Kahn fondly recalled of his friend, “I remember sitting in his studio as he showed me canvas after canvas, each more beautiful than the last. His color sense continues to resonate in the back of my mind.” (as quoted in J. Spring, Wolf Kahn, New York, 1996, p. 42)
