Lot Essay

When Emily Mason was growing up, she would accompany her mother, the artist Alice Trumbull Mason, to events at the Eighth Street Club, where fellow attendees included Robert Motherwell as well as Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Franz Kline and Helen Frankenthaler. The present work by Motherwell hung in Mason and Kahn's apartment as well as in Mason's New York City studio as part of what she called her "wall of friends."
