Lot Essay

The inside back cover of this attractive pendant watch bears the engraved commemorative inscription “1838-1885, aan J.W. Schuurman, ter Herinnering aangeboden door Z.K.H. Prins Frederik Der Nederlanden” (to J.W. Schuurman, presented as a souvenir by HRH Prince Frederik of the Netherlands", indicating that it was a gift from Prince Frederik der Nederlanden, the son of King Willem I der Nederlanden, to Johan Willem Schuurman.

Between 1872 and 1885, Schuurman was a Councelor at the Supreme Court in The Hague. He was given the watch in 1885 as a memory to this period.
