Breitling firstly launched the ref. 765 AVI in 1953 - a large pilot chronograph with a rotating steel bezel and a digital 15 minutes counter at 3 o'clock. The oversized numerals on its black dial ensure that reading the time doesn’t distract the pilot from flying. Its engraved rotating bezel makes it possible for pilots to access an immediate reading of long elapsed time and can also be used as a second time-zone indicator.
In 1965, Breitling updated reference 765 AVI by replacing the steel bezel by an anodized aluminum one. This update was accompanied by a reference change to 765 CP and the introduction of two different bezels, a full black one and a half black and silver one.
Ref. 765 CP, such as the present example, is also nicknamed "Jean-Claude Killy" after the famous French alpine ski racer who was spotted wearing this Breitling model at the 1968 Olympics in the French Alps.
