Edmond Chin has often characterised precious jewellery design as ‘creating patterns with light’. After all he says - ‘gems are prized because of their ability to transform light into glowing or scintillating colours catching the eye at the slightest movement of the wearer.’It is with this philosophy that he conceived of this extraordinary mount for a superb line of unheated sapphires from a distinguished gem collection. Alternating each richly coloured gem with a colourless diamond in the classical manner, he has transformed the rivière by replacing gold with curved transparent stone making the gems seem to float above the neck in a cloud of light. He chose colourless synthetic sapphire as a base for its durability and high refractive index although it takes 4 times longer to carve than rock crystal - in the production of this necklace, more than 100g of diamond-impregnated polishing powder was used up.The precious stones were then fused to the synthetic sapphire base by titanium wire and titanium links paved with sapphire melee, in a masterpiece of craftsmanship. Christie’s is honoured to unveil this necklace which marries top quality gemstone with a completely new style of construction, a piece that will undoubtedly take its place in the history of jewellery design.PROPERTY OF A PRIVATE COLLECTION
