Lot Essay
The unusual and peculiar T-Rex is inspired by the Tyrannosaurus Rex that lived in the present North American continent during the Cretaceous period around 65 million years ago. With structure closely modelled on the fossil of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, the clock is suspended between two strong jointed legs that end in taloned feet. The dial is made of the world-famous Murano glass from Italy known for its exquisite range of colors since the 13th century, with a translucent green “eyeball” that resembles the Tyrannosaurus Rex’s eye, while two slim steel hands arch outwards from the centre of the green eye, indicating the hours and minutes.
MB&F and L'Epée created the first T-Rex of steel in 2019 for Christie’s and “Only Watch” - the world’s foremost charity auction entirely devoted to research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Last year, MB&F and L'Epée partnered with the horological creative studio Massena Lab for the first time to release the T-Rex Bronze in a limited edition of 15 pieces. The collaboration retains the playfulness of the original T-Rex, added with a touch of childlike innocence. The use of bronze that was used by the early humans acts as a nod to the clock’s more ancient influence. The feet of the T-Rex Bronze are hand patinated before a stabilization process to create a dark brown color and for further oxidization. As a result, each individual T-Rex Bronze is distinct from the next, like the Tyrannosaurus Rex from the Cretaceous, who have their own distinct characters and life journeys.
