During his studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, Thomas Ruff encountered the work of Gerhard Richter, and was influenced by his use of magazine images as source material for his paintings. Drawing inspiration from this work, Thomas Ruff selected images from the internet for his Nudes series, deliberately drawing on explicit photographs found online. This process of photographic ready-mades was already practiced by the artist for his Stars series, which saw him acquire and reworked photographs from a collection of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in 1989.
With Nudes, Thomas Ruff adds a new element to his photographic practice, that without use of a camera. Retouched, enlarged, cropped – the artist enjoys blurring both the images represented and the boundaries between the different genres. Printed in large formats, without prejudice, Ruff treats these photographs for what they are and not what they represent, creating radically aesthetic works that transcend disciplines. Ev03 clearly fits in this context as a photograph remarkable both for its synoptic composition and for the work carried out on contrasts and colors, offering a vibrant and impactful entity.
