Lot Essay

Campagna was executed in 1958 as a preparatory drawing for the set design of the comic opera ‘Le Cantatrici Villane’, composed by Valentino Fioravanti and staged in 1959 in Florence and Paris, where the artist was spending most of his time.
The scene was composed of nine different mobile panels, of which the one our lot is a study for was called ‘Campagna’; these were designed to be moved around directly by the actors, as the screenplay required.
Severini had started dividing his time between Rome and Paris already in 1920; from the 1930s, and throughout the rest of his career, he created many decorative panels, frescoes, and mosaics, and he became involved in set and costume design for the theatre.
