Lot Essay

As founding member of Trockadero Gloxinia Ballet Company, a cross-dressing dance group that rehearsed in the Kitchen and at the Mercer Arts Center, Larry Ree was one of the dazzling performers that Hujar captured on film in the dance and theater scene of downtown New York during the 1970s. While other portraits of Ree by Hujar show him in full makeup, ready to perform, the portrait here reveals a more exposed and vulnerable persona.
