En 1939, Mathieu Matégot s’engage comme volontaire pour aller combattre. Fait prisonnier en Allemagne et mobilisé dans une usine d’accessoires mécaniques, il découvre alors le travail de la tôle perforée et imagine les possibilités offertes par ce matériau entre résistance et légèreté.
Le métal deviendra l’objet essentiel de son inspiration et le matériau principal de ses inventions, que son ingénieux savoir-faire va élever au rang d’art à part entière.
Après la guerre Mathieu Matégot s’inscrit au sein du grand renouvellement des arts décoratifs, ces années de reconstruction sollicitent un mobilier à l’écriture moins formelle et plus accessible. A l’aube de ces exigences, Mathieu Matégot développe une sémantique empreinte de liberté et de poésie : « des meubles légers, presqu’aériens, comme tels aisément déplaçables ou modulables, (qui) s’inscrivent dans un décor ludique composant une symphonie visuelle tout en jeux de matières, de formes et de couleurs ». Artisan du métal, il invente la Rigitulle qu’il fait breveter en 1952, matériau à évocation bicéphale, à l’instar de l’artiste, ce voile de métal implique la solidité du métal et la légèreté du tissu.
Couturier du métal qu’il travaille en dentelle, Matégot donne à ses ‘collections’ des dénominations géographiques et exotiques telles que ‘Santiago’, ‘Java’, ‘Nagasaki’ ou encore ‘Papillon’, autant d’invitations au voyage et à l’évasion.
Le lustre 'Santiago' présenté ici (lot 11) est le modèle précurseur de la série éponyme conçue et présentée au Salon des Arts Ménagers de 1955. Il se construit comme une architecture verticale de métal perforé au motif « d’une pellicule photo ». De son expérience de décorateur de théâtre, Mathieu Matégot conserve une attention particulière prêtée aux jeux d’ombres et de lumière. Le métal illuminé de ses perforations permet à la lumière de s’éparpiller.

In 1939, Mathieu Matégot signed up as a volunteer to go and fight. Taken prisoner in Germany and mobilised in a mechanical parts factory, he discovered perforated sheet metal and imagined the possibilities of this strong but light material.
Metal becames the primary object of his inspiration and the main material for his inventions, which his ingenious know-how would elevate to the rank of art in their own right.
After the war, Mathieu Matégot was part of the great renewal of the decorative arts. The reconstruction years called for furniture with a less formal and more accessible style. In response to these demands, Mathieu Matégot developed a style marked by freedom and poetry: "light, almost airy furniture, as such, easily movable or modular, (which) is part of a playful décor creating a visual symphony of materials, shapes and colours.” (P. Favardin, Mathieu Matégot, Norma, 2014)
A metal craftsman, he invented Rigitulle, which he patented in 1952. Like the artist, this material has a twofold evocation: the metal web combines the strength of metal with the lightness of fabric.
Like a couturier of metal, Matégot worked it like lace. He gave his 'collections' exotic geographical names such as 'Santiago', 'Java', 'Nagasaki' or 'Papillon', inviting his clients to travel and to escape.
The 'Santiago' hanging light presented here (lot 11) is the precursor of the eponymous series designed for and presented at the 1955 Salon des Arts Ménagers. It consists of a vertical structure of perforated metal with a 'photo film' motif. Having worked as a theatre set designer, Mathieu Matégot has retained a particular attention to the play of light and shadow. The metal, illuminated by its perforations, allows the light to scatter.
