Lot Essay

The title Wall of Light, evocative in so many ways, is weighted with contradiction. A wall has density; it separates and divides. It contains space and closes off light. Light, on the other hand, is ethereal; it opens and spreads. It radiates and fills space. These polarities are an intrinsic part of the process and content of Scully's recent paintings, in which he uses these apparent contradictions to create emotional content.
– Michael Auping (S. Phillips, ed., Sean Scully: Wall of Light, exh. cat., The Phillips Collection, p. 25)
