Praise for this vinous legend:
David Elswood
“A perfect deep red with obvious maturity. Intense, ripe black fruit aromas, supple leather plus notes of mint and menthol. Crisp yet silky tannins combining with extraordinary persistence and balance. Almost youthful. Impressive.” David Elswood, March 2011.
Michael Broadbent
“High percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (75%). In magnum; still very deep with a hint of ruby; classic, fragrant, harmonious bouquet; surprisingly sweet, glorious flavour, perfect balance. Years of life. Last tasted October 2006 *****(*) (6stars!)"
Robert Parker
"Port-like, with an unctuous texture, and a dark garnet color with considerable amber at the edge, the 1961 Latour possesses a viscosity and thickness. One of the three bottles served at the Chateau's tasting revealed a surprisingly aggressive, minty, herbaceous nose, but the other two bottles were liquid perfection, exhibiting fragrant, cedary, truffle, leather, mineral, and sweet, jammy aromatics, full-bodied, voluptuous textures, exquisite purity and concentration, and a layered, highly-nuanced finish that represents the essence of compellingly great wine.
The 1961 has been fully mature for over 15 years, but it seems to get richer, holding onto its succulence and fat, and developing more aromatic nuances without losing any sweetness or concentration. An extraordinary wine, it is unquestionably one of the Bordeaux legends of the century! Anticipated maturity: now-2025. 100 points. Robert Parker. June 2000."
Clive Coates
“Fine, full, rich colour; barely mature. The nose is simply marvelous. Magnificent fruit, incredibly fresh; enormous depth, complexity and concentration. Really perfumed. Very full. Still has tannin and will improve. Splendid follow through and aftertaste. The quality is almost beyond description; very complex, well-nigh perfect. Tasted at the Chateau in 1992. Drink now to 2040.”
Stephen Brook
“It is hard to imagine a Latour superior to the 1961, with its majestic fruit-cake and coffee nose, its immense concentration, its fire and spice, its invigorating acidity and exceptional length.”
