Lot Essay

Charles Burchfield executed July Evening near his home in Salem, Ohio during his self-proclaimed "golden year" in which he prolifically sketched and painted the world around him with career-defining creativity. The first owner of the present work, Leona Prasse was Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Cleveland Museum of Art and organized the first comprehensive exhibition of Burchfield’s prints and drawings in 1953.
