Lot Essay

Cheng Man Kuen's art expresses the notion of life and is inspired by the shadow of the lotus reflected in the water. Adding her life experience, consciousness, emotion and energy in her practice, her work explores the idea of Oneness.

For the artist, human souls are multi-dimensional. Cheng's paintings represent the energy matrix lines that look like a web in the universe, through which all points interconnect with each other in time and space. There are thousands of straight and horizontal lines interlaced. Every intersection is the life of one; every life is given free will to experience a form of manifestation. The artist was incessantly questioning why there was darkness. For her, if God represents love, there should only be light. In her work, she chooses to reveal light only when there is darkness. These two concepts are opposite sides of the entirety. We come to Earth to experience life and we are all connected by the divine power. Through her art, Cheng wishes to awaken her audience and offers new dimensions to experience life.
