BODEGAS LUSTAU
The origins of Emilio Lustau S.A. date back to 1896, when Mr. José Ruiz-Berdejo, a secretary to the Court of Justice, started cultivating the vines of the family’s estate, Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza, in his spare time. In these humble beginnings he made wines which were then sold to larger Sherry producers. Those involved in this activity were known as almacenistas or stockkeepers. In 1931, his daughter, María Ruiz-Berdejo Alberti, acquired a small winery closer to the center of Jerez de la Frontera, and there moved all the preexisting soleras, gaining notoriety and visibility.
Bodegas Lustau is nowadays considered a world-class benchmark for top-quality wines. Lustau has recently been awarded with multiple medals and trophies, being rewarded as Best Spanish Winery in 2011 and Best Sherry Producer in 2014 and 2016 awarded by the International Wine & Spirit Competition.
Lustau has received by the International Wine Challenge two Len Evans Trophies, first winery in history to have been granted this honor, in 2011 and again in 2016.
The Lustau Vintage Series Project started in 1989 and is an unusual way of understanding sherry wines through a lesser-known facet of the palomino grape. Singular, unrepeatable, and unconventional wines with which Lustau invites you to discover new paths and experiences. Every vintage evolves at its own pace, following its own route.
In our vineyard of Montegilillo, located in the “Jerez Superior” area, we cultivate the palomino variety which is used for these unique wines. Every year the plots that show the best conditions are selected for a late harvest. Thanks to a careful and exhaustive daily monitoring we attain the desired levels of maturity in the palomino grapes and the harvest is done rapidly before any rot or raisin signs appear in the berries. A partial fermentation and static aging are the key elements in the production and further aging process of Lustau’s Vintage Series wines. The wine is aged
following a static and oxidative aging process in sealed ex-oloroso American oak casks, seasoned for over a century. The wine is only bottled when it has reached its peak. With no time limits.
The most exclusive lot to celebrate 125 years of history
December 2021 will be the perfect occasion to celebrate 125 years of experience, diversity, and sherry wine expertise by offering an exclusive collection of old and rare Lustau wines. Together with Christie’s, Lustau extends this opportunity to collect three bottles from a rare collection of Lustau Vintage sherries, stored and reserved at Lustau’s most hidden aging room. Just one lot of three different vintages that will take the wine collector to the very origin of the Vintage Series project and the heart of Lustau’s own history.
Additionally, the collector will have a firsthand immersion in the fantasy culinary world of Ángel León, a gastronomic visionary. León has taken his cooking into unchartered territory thanks to his prodigious technical ability, boundless creativity and, above all, a constant love affair with the sea. Aponiente, located in El Puerto de Santa María, is cuisine of the unknown seas. A mysterious and infinite concept inspired in the ocean. Salt water, plankton, seaweed, abyssal life that will be matched with other rare Lustau wines, that are bottled exclusively for this world class restaurant.
