Façonneur de terre, plus artiste qu’artisan, plus inventif que répétitif, Jean Besnard est un céramiste doté d’une imagination plastique débordante, enrichi par ses nombreux voyages réalisés enfant, en Inde ou encore en Egypte. Cette créativité se manifeste tout au long de sa carrière par d’incessantes innovations de formes, de couleurs, et de techniques. Potier anticonformiste issu d’une famille d’artistes bourgeois, il est l’inventeur pionnier de maints aspects inédits de la céramique, tels que le crispé, l’or craquelé et différents procédés de gravure de la pâte. Il a également eu recours à de nombreux outils réservés à des métiers autres que le sien, comme la molette ou la dentelle, se révélant par le biais de ces ustensiles peu orthodoxes dans le travail de la terre comme un créateur totalement libre de ses initiatives. Sa riche carrière l’a mené à travailler pour l’atelier Primavera, à collaborer avec le décorateur Jacques Adnet, à voir son œuvre présentée sur les stands de Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, mais aussi à participer à l’Exposition universelle de 1937 à Paris. Tant en sa personne que dans ses œuvres, Jean Besnard, initiateur de gestes décisifs, fut un indéniable et authentique avant-gardiste.Clay worker, more artist than craftsman, more inventive than repetitive, Jean Besnard is a ceramist endowed with an overflowing plastic imagination, enriched by his numerous travels as a child, notably in India or in Egypt. This creativity manifests itself throughout his career by incessant innovations of forms, colors and techniques. As a non-conformist potter from a family of bourgeois artists, he was the pioneer inventor of many new aspects of ceramics, such as reticulated glaze, crackled gold and different processes of engraving the paste. He also used many tools reserved for crafts other than his own, such as a serrated pastry wheel or lace, revealing himself through these unorthodox utensils in the work of the clay as a creator totally free of his initiatives. His rich career led him to work for the Primavera workshop, to collaborate with the decorator Jacques Adnet, to see his work presented on the stands of Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, but also to participate in the Exposition universelle of 1937 in Paris. Both in his person and in his works, Jean Besnard, initiator of decisive gestures, was an undeniable and authentic avant-gardist.
