Lot Essay

According to the authors of the 1998 exhibition catalogue Lyonel Feininger, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Erich Heckel, Künstlerfreundschaften, the title of the present lot, Stadttor III, in associating the two words 'Town' and 'Gate', reveals that the artist was likely referring to the idea of living in a closed living space, linking ot themes in German Romanticism.
