Lot Essay

Very rarely seen on the market and one of the scarcest and most elusive references of the first Speedmasters, this 2915-3 is preserved in original condition still retaining the alpha hands, BASE 100 aluminium bezel, micro-size Omega logo crystal and the original Omega crown. It furthermore stands out by the very attractive ‘tropical’ dial, its deep brown colour made possible by the individual aging process, the colour of the dial has evolved and changed over time, creating this rich dark chocolate tone. The Extract from the Archives states that this watch was delivered to Nigeria, its subsequent exposure to the hot climate is therefore likely to have brought about the colour change to the dial.
The specifics of present watch are detailed below. For ease of identification, any classifications can be cross-referenced to the book ‘Moon Watch Only – The Ultimate Omega Speedmaster Guide’, Grégoire Rossier and Anthony Marquié, 2014.

The Dial
Tropical type ‘A3’ in use between 1958 and 1960. The main distinctive features are the flattened ‘O’ of Omega and minutes counter with short secondary markers.

The Hands
Known as ‘Alpha – Variant 2’, the hour hand with distinctive triangular-shaped luminous field. The chronograph seconds is the correct straight white (also available with lollipop hand), white ‘Alpha’ subsidiary hands.

The Case
Screw back engraved ‘Speedmaster’ and with the hippocampus emblem. Black ‘Style 2’ aluminium ‘BASE 1000’ bezel insert in use between 1959 and 1961. Original Omega winding crown with ‘flat footed’ Omega symbol. Hesalite (shatterproof acrylic polymer), Type A2 -Omega symbol with wide loop and short feet.

Reference 2915-3
The reference 2915-3 with alpha hands and black Base 1000 bezel is one of the rarest and most desirable configurations of the legendary reference 2915. It was made in 1959 only and can be considered a transitional model between the references 2915-2 and 2998-1 with which the 2915-3 shares many features.
