Lot Essay

Marguerite Zorach painted the present family portrait in New Hampshire during the summer of 1915. The artist depicts herself holding son Tessim next to her standing husband, the artist William Zorach. William wrote, "That summer we painted. The pictures had greater depth, a sense of relation with the universe and with the lives of people. Unfortunately most of this work was ruined...only a very few paintings survived." (W. Zorach, Art is My Life, New York, 1967, p. 41)
