Lot Essay

Part of the first lady’s collection by F.P. Journe, this extremely beautiful pink gold Élégante tonneau-shaped diamond-set wristwatch was designed and conceived exclusively for women, combining unmistakable Journe style with technical ingenuity, it features a revolutionary electro-mechanical movement. This pink gold Élégante is presented in superb condition and is also accompanied by the box and Certificate. Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, the present watch is the first diamond-set example in pink gold to be offered at auction.

The tonneau-shaped case is set with 385 white diamonds of VVS1 clarity and F/G colour, weighing a total of 3.53 carats. In addition, the dial is pavè-set with a further 381 diamonds and the deployant clasp also set with 0.95 carats of diamonds.

A revolutionary horological concept that was 8 years in development, the electro-mechanical movement is one of the most fascinating aspects of the F.P. Journe Élégante. Allowing the time to be stopped and restarted automatically, this incredible caliber 1210 movement is visible through the sapphire crystal display back, the motion detector with inertia weight is visible between 4 and 5 o'clock on the dial. When the Élégante is motionless, it goes into standby mode after thirty minutes to conserve its power supply and the hands stop turning. However, whilst the movement is in standby mode, the microprocessor continues to keep track of time. As soon as the watch is moved again, the hands immediately set themselves to the current time, taking the shortest route either clockwise or counter-clockwise to the precise time. Completely unique, this system means that the battery has up to ten years of uninterrupted life when the watch is regularly worn or an amazing eighteen years when in standby mode. All the mechanical parts of the movement are made by F.P. Journe and the electronic parts made in Switzerland with a microprocessor specifically created for the Élégante model.
In François-Paul Journe’s own words:
“I created this watch because for 20 years, women have been asking me to design a watch for them; a watch that was different and comfortable to wear, and that suited their needs and desires. I therefore created this long-lasting watch especially for them. today the “Élégante” features the only electro-mechanical movement conceived and created for the luxury market and offering a true vision of luxury.”
