The Patek Philippe Advanced Research Department was created in 2005 to be the main driver for The Maison’s technological developments within the field of horology. The department specializes in the use of silicon through the creation of prototype parts which are then incorporated into the firm’s highly sought after, ‘Advanced Research” models. The Advanced Research Department is dedicated to creating the most cutting edge of horological advancements within the Patek Philippe model line, most notably, the Aquanaut Ref. 5650.
In 2017, Patek Philippe would debut the Ref. 5650, as the first Aquanaut model to feature components created by the Advanced Research Department, displayed through an initially polarizing aesthetic “cut-out” feature of the dial. The Ref. 5650 further sets itself apart from its siblings in the Advanced Research line by featuring the combination of a flexible steel mechanism (designed for the dual time zone function) as well as incorporating the updated silicon-based balance spring, intended for further stability and accuracy.
