Lot Essay

In 1989, Rolex launched reference 14270, which incorporated numerous changes to the cherished Explorer, including a new case, dial, movement, sapphire crystal, only the hands remained the same. The new caliber 3000 movement has a higher beat and greater shock resistance than previous generations.

Although differing significantly from the vintage ref. 1016, ref. 14270 represents the perfect blending of modern features yet still maintains the DNA of the Explorer line. Ref. 14270 was discontinued until around 2001.

A rare example of the reference, the timepiece is part of an important private collection and is bestowed with the exclusive Tiffany & Co. retailer signature. A prestigious and rare trait to be seen on scarce references of the Swiss manufacture, the wristwatch represents an uncommon sighting at auction. With clean and attractive black dial allied to a well preserved stainless steel case of strong proportions, the timepiece astounds the avid collector through its overall appeal.
