Lot Essay

Originally launched in 1969 with screw down pushers and manual wind Valjoux 727 based movements, Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 6263 and 6265 were manufactured for nearly twenty years until they were replaced by the first automatic Cosmograph Daytona, reference 16520. Reference 6263 was offered with a black acrylic bezel and reference 6265 was offered with a solid bezel with engraved tachymeter scale. Both references were available with either a black, silvered or champagne dial. A black or silvered dial was available for steel watches and black or champagne dial for watches made in either 14k or 18k gold. It is estimated that of the 20,000 examples of reference 6263 and reference 6265 which were manufactured, as few as 2,000 watches were made in 14k and 18k gold.

The present lot, a truly exceptional example of reference 6263 in 14k yellow gold bearing a 3.6 million serial number and dating from 1974, will capture the attention and hearts of all collectors. With its crisp case, intact hallmarks and wonderful purple patina as well as its flawless champagne dial with all lume plots fully intact, this watch is a true gem. And as if these characteristics weren’t enough the watch was retailed by Tiffany & Co. in NYC and bears a wonderful and pronounced “Tiffany & Co” signature on the dial, complimented by a Tiffany & Co. inventory number engraved on the back of the lug. This combination of details and the state of preservation underlines the incredible rarity and desirability of this watch, consigned for auction by the son of the original owner who was a prominent and world-renowned neurosurgeon based in Montreal, Canada.
