Lot Essay

With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming the production of the present watch with diamond and ruby hour markers and case-band decorated with 45 diamonds (approx. 0.64 ct) and 45 rubies (approx. 0.85 ct) made in 1950 and sold in 1951, retailed by Casa Welsch Lima, Peru.

For a period of time in the early 20th century there was an idea to “Europeanize” the Capital city of Lima so that its citizens could enjoy the modernity and sophistication of other great European capital cities like London, Madrid, and Paris. On December 11, 1909 Casa Welsch opened on the corner of Mercaderes and Plateros streets in San Agustin and remained the most exclusive store in Lima, Peru for many years.
With idea to present its clients some of the most extraordinary and exceptional objects the world had to offer, buyers from Casa Welsch retailed some truly magnificent and unique watches. The present lot in platinum, with diamonds and rubies used not only as markers on the dial but to decorate the entire case-band and bow of the watch, is captivating in its beauty and exemplifies all the Casa Welsch stood for. Collectors of Patek Philippe, when admiring this beautiful pocket watch will be reminded of another masterpiece by Patek Philippe retailed by Casa Welsch, the “Flame” reference 2422 in platinum with diamond and emerald markers. Two masterpieces, realized by two visionaries.
