There is perhaps not a watch as beautiful, technologically advanced, and as complicated to make as Patek Philippe reference 2526 during its time. Made between 1953 and 1960, reference 2526 has superb and timeless sloping contours, soft, smooth and flowing, yet sharp. Its case is sculpture for the wrist and a sight to behold. In addition, reference 2526 houses the very first automatic movement created by Patek Philippe (cal. 12-600 AT) and is believed by many to be the finest and most exceptionally finished movement ever made. And, as if a sculpted case and the title of finest movement ever made were not enough, many reference 2526 were made with cream colored enamel dials which are nothing short of captivating.
The present lot is a magnificent example of reference 2526 in 18k yellow gold, case no. 678’237 and movement no. 760’112, manufactured in 1955 and coming from the first in a series of four. It features a remarkably well preserved screw back case with intact hallmarks, a magnificent and flawless first series cream colored enamel dial bearing all the characteristics of a first series dial, and of course the signature “PP” crown.
Coming from an impressive California collection, this 2526 impresses with its outstanding condition but it overwhelms with its Tiffany & Co. dual signed dial. Complimenting the Tiffany & Co. signature on the dial is a hand engraved Tiffany & Co. inventory number on the reverse of the lug as well as the watches original Tiffany & Co. box. With only a handful of Tiffany & Co. signed 2526’s known, this watch in this condition represents an opportunity to own one of the most beautiful watches ever made by man, born out of a collaboration between Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co.
