Lot Essay

The drawing corresponds with the allegorical figures reclining on the pediment above a door in the Sala dell'Olimpo at the Villa Barbaro in Maser, built circa 1556-1558 to Palladio's design, and entirely decorated by Paolo Veronese circa 1560-1561 (see T. Pignatti & F. Pedrocco, Véronèse. Catalogue complet, Florence, 1991, no. 55, ill.).
