Lot Essay

Aldegrever's Fortune is a reinterpretation of Albrecht Dürer's famous, large engraving Nemesis of 1502 (see lot 156). He greatly reduced it in scale, turned the figure to a frontal view, and replaced the dramatic mountainous landscape with a more tranquil coastal scenery. Interesting is the addition of the dead serpent held by the figure in her left hand, an iconographical detail not present in Dürer's print. This engraving of the goddess of chance and luck may be Aldegrever's last engraving.
