FLUDD, Robert (1574-1637)
Tractatus Secundus, De praeternaturali utriusque mundi historia, In sectiones tres divisa. Francofurti: Erasmus Kempffer and Theodore de Bry, 1621.
First edition of the fourth part of Fludd’s major work on the macrocosm and microcosm. This fourth part of Fludd’s works is particularly concerned with meteorology, itself divided into three parts, in which Fludd attempts to reconcile his mysticism with the science of 17th century. It is one of the rarest volumes of his works and is seldom found bound with the other volumes of his Magnum Opus. Fludd contends in his work that humans are linked to divinity through nature, and that divine truth can be found in the microcosm-macrocosm analogy. Fludd sought a new understanding of nature based on Christian principles. Duveen 222; Wellcome 2326.

Folio (287 x 185mm). Title with grotesque engraved ornament by Theodore de Bry, six engravings, many woodcut illustrations and tables, woodcut headpieces and cul-de-lampe (very short tear just into engraved illustration on final leaf but without loss, light browning throughout). Modern red and green marbled vellum over boards.
