Lot Essay

Les figures à gauche du motif central de la grappe de cubes se rapportent aux dessins de Marcel Duchamp pour le Roi et la Reine de son Jeu d’Echecs de Poche de 1943. Les dés, qui représentent les aléas du hasard séparant les amants, font référence à l’affiche de Duchamp pour le troisième championnat de France d’échecs à Nice en 1925.

The figures to the left of the central motif of the cluster of cubes relate to Duchamp's designs for the King and Queen in his Pocket Chess Set from 1943. The dice, which represent the vagaries of chance separating the lovers, refer to Duchamp's poster for the Third French Chess Championship in Nice in 1925.
