Lot Essay

The present work is part of a group of watercolors Childe Hassam executed during his first trip through Europe in 1883. Executed in Spain, Gate of the Alhambra explores the ornamental design of the Puerta del Vino—one of the Granada palace's oldest Islamic arches—and exhibits the artist's skillful spontaneity afforded by the medium.
