Lot Essay

Crab tureens such as the present lot are rare and only a few are known. A similar example sold at Bonhams, London, 16 May 2019, lot 250. Other documented crab tureens are iron-red and more elaborately decorated, such as the one published in A. du Boulay, Christie's Pictorial History of Chinese Ceramics, Oxford, 1984, p. 303, fig. 3, once in the G. Duff Collection, Lisbon and sold at Sotheby's, New York, 18 January 2019, lot 324.
