Lot Essay
The cut (voided) velvet used to cover this confidante likely comes from a Chinese floor covering. A velvet carpet fragment with similar lotus pattern, dating to the late Ming/early Qing dynasties, is illustrated by J. Vollmer in Emblems of Empire: Selections from the Mactaggart Art Collection, Edmonton, 2009, p. 140. Other similar examples can be found at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London [V&A 433-1882] and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York [MET 30.76.37].
