Further Details
Flaming On is an exemplary work of Jules Olitski’s poured and stained canvases, which was painted while the artist taught at Bennington College (1963-1967). While his approach to application varied, from brushes to sponges, mops, and rollers, his process was primarily informed with color in mind, grounded in the conviction that color can exist for itself. Flaming On is a testament to this belief and the ethos of Olitski’s contemporaries, such as Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland, that when a composition is reduced, there can actually be more to see. This reigns true in the present lot, where details come alive through the nuance of stroke, scale, and shift in color spectrum.
Proceeds from the sale of Flaming On will be used to benefit Bennington College’s Art for Access program and the Jules Olitski Scholarship. In fall 2018, the College launched Art for Access as a dynamic philanthropic initiative that leverages the institution’s long and celebrated reputation in the visual arts while advancing its commitment to equity, diversity, and access. As an institution without a museum or permanent collection, Bennington has long held that the works of art on its campus be a changing, dynamic teaching resource. Through this effort, the College extends this vision and will seek gifts of art from donors and friends with two related aims in mind: to develop and expand the works of art in the College’s holdings to enrich the educational experience, and, after extended use in teaching, to provide funding for scholarships for talented students through the sale of select artworks in the future.
This lot is being sold by a charitable organization with proceeds intended to benefit Art for Access and the Jules Olitski Scholarship and a US taxpayer may be able to claim a deduction for any amount of the purchase price paid in excess of the mid-estimate.
