Lot Essay
The Langematik Perpetual is one of the most enduring and iconic complicated watches of Lange & Söhne’s catalogue. Released in 2019 and only available in Lange’s boutiques, this beautiful limited edition example is number 50 of 100 pieces. Cased in 18K ‘honey gold’ with solid silver argenté-coloured dial and ‘honey gold’ hands, it is offered in exceptional ‘like new’ condition with the full set of accessories. To the best of our knowledge it is only the second example of this ‘honey gold’ limited edition to be presented at international auction.
The Langematik Perpetual was the first mechanical wristwatch to combine a perpetual calendar with a Lange outsize date. The calendar displays as well as the moon phase indication can be advanced either individually or collectively by depressing the calendar change button in the band. Once correctly set, the date display remains accurate until the next secular year occurs. The moon phase mechanism is also stunningly accurate: after 122.6 years of uninterrupted operation, it deviates from synodic lunation by merely one day. It also features Lange’s patented zero-reset mechanism. The ‘zero-reset’ mechanism simplifies the precise synchronization of the watch to exact time. When the crown is pulled out, it automatically causes the seconds hand to jump to the 12 o'clock or ‘zero’ position so that it can be restarted in exact coordination with a time signal.
Honey Gold
In 2010, Lange specially developed its own unique colour of gold, warm and lustrous, it is reminiscent of the colour of honey and was therefore named ‘honey gold’. The secret alloy includes silicon which is physically harder and paler than standard 18K gold. Inspired by the colour of the gold cases of Lange & Söhne’s early pocket watches, ‘honey gold’ is only ever used for special limited edition timepieces such as the present watch and is therefore highly prized by collectors.
