Lot Essay
Marking the Pose draws upon Roberts’s experience of the ‘life room’ both as a student at the Slade (1910-1913) and later as a visiting teacher at the LCC Central School of Art and Design (from 1925 to 1960, apart from the war years). During his time at the Central School, Roberts shared the management of the life class with fellow artist, and family friend, Bernard Meninsky. This satirical take on the subject was at one time owned by Meninsky’s widow, Nora Meninsky.
