“The RM56-01 Sapphire symbolises all the expertise Richard Mille has accrued in showcasing a calibre through its sheer transparency” - Richard Mille
The sapphire crystal case RM56-01 is ‘at the top of the pyramid of Richard Mille watches’.
It is said that perfection comes at a very high price, even by Richard Mille’s standards the RM56-01 Tourbillon Sapphire is as close to perfection as it is possible to get. To the best of our knowledge, this magnificent timepiece is the first example ever to be offered at international auction, providing the unique opportunity to obtain one of the most incredible and exclusive of Richard Mille’s timepieces without delay.
One of Richard Mille’s most extraordinary and ambitious creations, the concept of the RM56-01 is about maximum transparency which is fulfilled by the three component parts of the case, crafted from single blocks of transparent sapphire crystal. Sapphire crystal is incredibly hard to machine and only made possible due to the brands unrivalled experience of working with innovative materials and the purchase of a specialist machine specifically for the RM56-01. The work was done by the world specialists in sapphire crystal, Stettler of Lyss in Switzerland where the machining of the three case parts took an incredible 40 days, 24-hours per day, followed by a further 350 hours to polish. The amazing transparent movement was made possible due to the experience gained during production of the RM018 which has a baseplate and bridge in the same material. Technically very impressive, as expected from Richard Mille, the high-precision sapphire crystal and titanium movement is unaffected by temperature or wear. For even greater transparency, the base plate, central bridge and third wheel are all machined from sapphire crystal.
The transparent dial with titanium minute ring and luminous hour indexes, displays the tourbillon in the lower part of the dial. At 1 o’clock is a torque sector display which shows the mainspring’s tension, the ideal tension range for isochronism and reliable operation being between 53 dNmm and 65 dNmm. A symmetrical sector display for the power-reserve is placed opposite. A small indicator at 4 o’clock provides the wearer, via a push-button in the crown, with the choice of one of three options for the operation of the crown. At each press, the hand points to either W (winding), N (neutral) or H (hands).
This amazing Richard Mille watch is a true rare masterpiece in every sense of the word and is without doubt one of the most coveted and wondrous timepieces in the world.
