In 1993 the art collector and first owner of the present work said: ‘Claes Oldenburg was in my class (1950), and many years after graduation and my collecting of a number of his works, I said to him, "Claes, when we were undergraduates I didn't know you were an artist. You never took any art courses!". He answered, "I was the artist, what could they teach me about art’. (Horace H. Solomon, quoted in Yale Collects Yale, exh. cat., Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, 1993).
