The luxurious watches produced for Cartier’s highly exclusive ‘Collection Privé’ are made in small limited editions that showcase the very best of the company’s immeasurable contribution to watch design over the last century. Always greatly oversubscribed and much coveted, the Collection Privé encompasses contemporary interpretations of some of Cartier’s most celebrated and legendary models that have captivated generations of the company’s clients.
In a world’s first, Christie’s Hong Kong has the immense privilege of presenting together in one lot, the complete range of six ‘Cloche’ timepieces of the 2021 Collection Privé edition. Furthermore, all six watches are number 20 of their respective individual limited edition. It is an unprecedented event at auction for all six 2021 ‘Cloche’ watches to be offered together at one time and with matching edition numbers. Collectors are afforded the almost certainly one-off opportunity of obtaining every different model of this almost impossible to find modern Cartier classic.
First created in 1922 as an avant-garde alternative to the round and rectangular wristwatches of the time, the Cartier ‘Cloche’ got its name due to the bell-shape of the case, ‘Cloche’ being the French word for bell. Ingeniously, the asymmetrical design of the case and the atypical dial layout whereby the XII numeral is adjacent to the crown allows for the watch to be used as a miniature desk clock.
The six 2021 ‘Cloche’ watches offered together in this auction feature the new in-house movements - caliber 9626 MC for the three skeletonized models and caliber 1917 MC for the closed dial models.
