Lot Essay

Launched in 1992, Patek Philippe Reference 5040 was the brand’s first tortue-style perpetual calendar wristwatch. Paying tribute to Patek Philippe watches from the 1930s and 40s, the case is a melding between a tonneau and cushion case. It’s distinctive styling is complimented with Breguet hands and hour markers.

Housed within is Patek Philippe Caliber 240Q. Often regarded as one of the most important movements ever created, the caliber features a perpetual calendar, moon phases, 24 hour indicator, and manages to measure under a 7mm thickness. Four setting pin pushers can be found at the sides of the case to assist with adjusting the calendar. In addition to impressive feats of engineering, the movement is beautiful with hand-finished Côtes de Genève and a 22k yellow gold micro-rotor.
