Lot Essay

Known for his paintings of the Northeast such as the sweeping landscapes of New Hampshire, Benjamin Champney produced few depictions of the American West. The present work was inspired by his trip to the region while visiting friend and contemporary Thomas Hill, and was made into a chromolithograph by Boston publisher Dodge, Collier & Perkins.
