Lot Essay

Born in Mississippi in 1857, Gaines Ruger Donoho studied at the Art Students League of New York under William Merritt Chase, as well as Académie Julian in Paris. Donoho remained in France from 1878 to 1887, spending time in a range of locales including Étaples, the Barbizon area, and Grez-sur-Loing and regularly exhibiting at the Paris Salon.

A related work of the same title is in the collection of the High Museum, Atlanta, Georgia.
