engraving, circa 1508, on laid paper, without watermark, a good impression of this extremely rare little print, second, final state, with small margins, generally in good condition; together with Leaf Ornament with Lilies of the Valley, engraving, circa 1515, on laid paper, without watermark, a very good impression, trimmed to or just outside the borderline, fractionally to the subject in places, the sheet backed, with a long repaired tear

Albertina, Vienna, with their duplicate stamp (Lugt 5 f); their sale, C. G. Boerner, Leipzig, 25-27 May 1925, lot 51 ('Ausgezeichneter Abdruck von tadelloser Erhaltung und mit Rand. (...) Das äußerst seltene Blatt, von dem W. nur fünf Exemplare in deutschem und österreichischem Museumbesitz nachweisen konnte, scheint auch in den größten Auslandssammlungen zu fehlen und dürfte im Handel kaum je vorgekommen sein') (Mk. 485).

Lot Essay

According to the census in New Hollstein, no impressions of the first state of the Standard-Bearer with a Woman is known. Of the second, final state - after the reduction of the plate probably untertaken by the artist himself - only five examples are recorded in public collections. The present impression was deaccessioned from the Albertina in Vienna.
