etching, 1861, on wove paper, without watermark, a very good impression of van Gelder's third state (of four), with wide margins, probably the full sheet, in good condition; together with Branchages, by the same hand, etching, circa 1880, on Chine appliqué on wove paper, a very good impression of the only state, from the first, posthumous edition of fifty impressions, with wide margins, presumably the full sheet, in good condition

Lot Essay

These two etchings were printed from the recto and verso of the same copper plate.
Branchages was never published in the artist's lifetime and, according to van Gelder, the print-run of the first edition was not completed; there was a second, numbered edition of 125 impressions, after the plate was reduced and steel-faced.
