Lot Essay

Alan Wilkinson explains the origin of the title of the current work, ‘This was Moore’s first sculpture in which the name of another artist is included in the title. … In almost all Moore’s work, the titles were usually assigned after the sculpture was completed. It is less likely that a particular sculpture by the sixteenth-century French sculptor Jean Goujon (1540-62) inspired this reclining figure than that, when the work was finished, Moore saw in the thin, elongated limbs of this elegant little bronze similarities to Goujon’s work’ (A.G. Wilkinson, loc. cit.).
