Lot Essay

The present work probably dates from 1965, or soon after, when Vaughan visited both Morocco and Greece. The blue skies and bleached out colours he found in the Mediterranean had a significant effect on his palette and he began to evolve forms with strong light and dark contrasts. The mysterious groupings of figures he encountered in the market squares of Essaouira, Taroudant and Marrakech also began to feature in his gouache and oil paintings on his return to London.

We are very grateful to Gerard Hastings for preparing this catalogue entry. His new book on Keith Vaughan's graphic art will be published by Lund Humphries later this year.
