The present limited series blue dial Octa Automatique Lune ‘France-China 50’ was produced between 2014 and 2016 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the French republic and the People’s Republic of China. Presented in exceptional condition, it is also accompanied by the full set of accessories.
A prize catch for both F.P. Journe collectors and connoisseurs of independent haute horology alike, the present Octa Automatique combines incredible good looks, technical virtuosity and great exclusivity.
France was the first major power since 1950 to recognize the People’s Republic of China under Chairman Mao. On 27 January 1964, France and the People's Republic of China officially established diplomatic relations, prompting The Observer of London to comment a few days later that “Charles de Gaulle has entered the Asian stage like a diplomatic ice-breaker.”
F.P. Journe was the official watchmaker for France-China 50 and for the occasion this stunning and meticulously designed Octa Lune was created. Featuring a 40 mm. platinum case complemented by the striking matte blue dial. The numerals are applied white gold with diamond-tooled finish and a tiny ‘France-China 50’ logo in red sits at three o’clock beside the watchmaker’s signature.
It is thought that only ten pieces of the France-China 50 Watch Octa Automatique Lune were officially made, with one watch for each of the ten F.P. Journe boutiques worldwide. Although additional pieces were available by special request at the time, the total number produced was extremely small.
The name ‘Octa’ was given as a prefix to all F.P. Journe’s automatic watches because in Latin it means ‘eight’ and the figure ‘8’ on its side signifies the concept of limitlessness or infinity.
The Octa Automatique Lune model, as with all F.P. Journe timepieces, combines aesthetic beauty with high precision. The dial features Journe's patented large date display, power reserve and 18K gold moon phase with stars on a blue background and bears F.P. Journe’s signature and the Latin inscription ‘Invenit et Fecit’ (invented and made). Journe’s famously distinctive rhodium-plated steel hands complete the stunning effect. The 18K rose gold Journe caliber 1300.3 automatic movement has an off-centre 22 carat gold rotor. It was the first automatic movement to provide 120 hours of power reserve.
