Lot Essay

The present Lange 1, ref. 101.027x, is both mysterious and intriguing both in the watch’s look and the story behind its creation. To the best of our knowledge, the reference was never officially marketed or introduced to Lange collectors. In 2002, the Saxony State government prepared a ‘World Heritage Site’ UNESCO application for its breathtaking ‘Elbe Valley’. The valley was awarded the name a ‘World Heritage Site’ in 2005, however, the title was removed after four years in 2009.

Within the 2005-2009 period, in celebration of being named the ‘World Heritage Site’ the Waldschlößen Bridge was constructed. The current watch was launched in celebration of this important milestone, and the blued hands is in celebration of the Dresden’s signature ‘blue wonder’. However, due to the later dispute with UNESCO, and the subsequent removal of the UNESCO title, A. Lange & Söhne never formally introduced these watches. It is believed that the reference was produced around 2002 to 2008, with possibly around 200 pieces produced.
