Lot Essay

Displaying impeccable taste, the owner of the Ultimate Collection has shown appreciation of the beauty of flowers with this superb Rare Handicrafts edition reference 5077/100G-036 in white gold set with diamonds. Remaining factory double-sealed, this masterpiece is presented in new and untouched condition with Certificate of Origin. The bezel and lugs sparkle with 141 brilliant-cut diamonds weighing a total of 1.109 carats.

This ravishing timepiece named ‘Primevères’ was originally one watch of a set of three different ‘Portrait of Flowers’ watches introduced in 2019 with hand-painted on enamel dials depicting either rhododendrons, primroses (the present watch) and minosas. A true work of art, its rarity is due to the stunning hand-crafted painted on enamel dial depicting a primroses. Flowers have great symbolic importance, by their form, aspect, and fragrance, they are considered to be highly spiritual, reflecting the profound nature of the Chinese people. Poems and proverbs show the importance of flowers in the culture: "There is no flower without beauty in the world"; "A flower gives us a glimpse of paradise". Using the technique of Grand Feu miniature painting on enamel to convey the tonal beauty of the primroses and wood anemones in the background, the artist has painted the design freehand in the same way as an oil painting. The dial was then fired in a furnace at around 900 degrees Celsius causing the enamel colours to fuse with the glass-like surface. The creation of each dial requires several firings, using a range of enamel colours. It would take one of Patek Philippe’s master enamellists approximately 7 days of work to create such an individual works of art.

Patek Philippe’s rare handicrafts division is dedicated to the preservation of the eclectic artisanal skills that have been associated with horology for over 400 years. The continuing use of these precious techniques in modern watchmaking contributes to their survival whilst at the same time delighting and impressing collectors and connoisseurs. The resplendent watch offered here pays tribute to Patek Philippe’s devotion to keeping these ancient crafts alive and demonstrates the mastery of techniques and subjects that enhance and enrich Patek Philippe’s enduring appeal and reputation for excellence in all aspects of watchmaking.

Each year Patek Philippe produces around 40 one-of-a-kind pieces of rare handcraftsmanship that don’t appear in the stores or the current collections catalogue. The regular collection is also enriched annually with new models decorated by artisans at the top of their game.

The wristwatches with rare handicrafts enamel dials, always made in very small editions are now eagerly awaited as iconic and highly collectable horological works of art.
